Mimir NMS

The Mimir NMS concentrates all Operation Support Subsystems (OSS) needed for the provision of broadband services with the Forsway Hub.

As the central point for OSS management, it acts as the Network Management System (NMS) that grants monitoring and control of all the elements part of the Forsway Solution: The subscriber modem (Odin), the Satellite Broadband Network Gateway (Mimir) and the Encapsulation and Modulation Subsystem (EMS). Additional features include VNO, Support for multiple EMS, HUB/terminal monitoring and FAP/Plans.

Features and Functionality

Mimir NMS Monitoring

Advanced user monitoring capabilities including a combination of basic monitoring such as system health, bandwidth, and data consumption and advanced monitoring such as geographical mapping of end-users and application aware deep packet inspection. Automatic system monitoring reports critical issues and gives early warnings on potential problems.

User interface (web based)

Mimir NMS is a simple web based user interface, hosted by the Mimir server (in the event of Forsway Hub platform integrating several Mimirs, the Mimir NMS will be accessible via any of the Mimir parts of the platform).


The Mimir(s) needs to be configured properly prior to usage in a live environment. The Mimir NMS allows editing the parameters in an easy way with the help of its web based user interface.

The Mimir NMS can also control several parameters of the connected EMS device(s).

Fair Access Policy (FAP)

In order to provide a fair share of bandwidth amongst the connected Odin terminals depending on the service they subscribe a configurable FAP mechanism has been implemented.

The Mimir NMS allows the configuration of multiple FAPs which can be stored and used with the Odins.

Service Plans

Closely coupled to the FAP is the creation of different service plans. Multiple plans can be added and assigned to different Odín terminals.

A plan consists of the permitted download speed, the maximum downloaded data per month as well as which FAP to use.

High Availability Load Balancing Cluster

The Mimir NMS offers high availability load balancing and clustering features which will spread user load on nodes within the Hub. The high availability feature also ensures continued operation, even when nodes in the cluster are disconnected. This feature also enables additional cluster nodes to be added dynamically as demand increase, enabling horizontal scaling of your service.

Deep Packet Inspection (DPI)

The Mimir NMS is delivered with a fully integrated Deep Packet Inspector (DPI) engine which enables usage analysis of user patterns as well as opportunity for contingency traffic shaping.


A population is a group of Odin remote terminals sharing certain conditions. The MimirNMS permits the filtering and composing populations or groups depending on their geographical location, plans, EMS and Mímir they belong to.

The grouping of Odin terminals by populations can help differentiated (regional by country) billing and accounting when applicable; In terms of operation.

User Management

The users are closely linked to the FAP, plan and population. On top of that they have a username and password for logging in to the Mimir as well as an unique MAC-address of the terminal that the user owns.

Additional parameters that a user possesses are personal details such as name, e-mail and address.


The Mimir NMS is able to present information regarding the health of both the Mímir(s) as well as the EMS(s). Health in this context meaning status, eventual error messages as well as log files.

Furthermore it is able of viewing connected Odíns both at present and in the past as well as information regarding time connected and downloaded/uploaded data for both the forward link and the return channel.
